Urgent care treatment centers fill a need for those with non-life-threatening ills needing prompt attention but not severe enough for the emergency room.

For-profit companies throughout the United States serve communities while lifting the burden from hospitals. These names might sound familiar:

  • Concentra Inc.
  • NextCare
  • CityMD Urgent Care
  • Medtronic
  • Sutter Health
  • Siemens
  • Patient First

From models such as those, the Philippines is embarked on its new, or bagong, system. Dubbed BUCAS for Bagong Urgent Care Ambulatory Services, the project aims to establish 28 primary care centers to serve the 28 million poorest Filipinos by the year 2028, also known as 28 for 28 in 28.

Change and Challenges Give Life Deeper Meaning

“Since March and April, 2024, BUCAS facilities have opened to provide urgent care and ambulatory services in several regions of the Philippines, an initiative of the Department of Health Philippines,” said Dr. Helen Madamba.
